Trash Can Cover Size Guide: 32, 45, 64 or 95 Gallon — Which Fits Your Wheeled Cart?
Most outdoor trash carts in the US and Canada are one of four sizes: 32, 45, 64, or 95 gallons. Picking the right cover size is simple once you know which cart you have — and it matters, because a cover that fits properly seals in odor, while one that's too small won't stretch over the lid and one that's too big won't grip. Here's how to measure your cart and match it to the right Trash Smell Buster cover.
How Do I Find My Trash Cart's Size?
The fastest way is to look for the capacity stamp. Almost every wheeled rollout cart has its size molded into the lid or the upper back of the cart body — look for "32 GAL," "64 GAL," "95 GAL," or the liter equivalent (roughly 120, 170, 240, or 360 liters). If the stamp is worn away, check your city or hauler's website: most list the cart sizes they issue by neighborhood.
No stamp and no listing? Measure the cart instead:
- Height: Measure from the ground to the top of the closed lid. A 95-gallon cart stands about 45–46 inches tall; a 64-gallon about 41–42 inches; a 45-gallon about 37–38 inches; a 32-gallon about 34–36 inches.
- Width: Measure across the lid. The 95-gallon lid is roughly 28–29 inches wide, the 64-gallon about 24–25 inches, the 45-gallon about 23 inches, and the 32-gallon about 20–21 inches.
- When in doubt, size up. The elastic hem has plenty of stretch, and a cover one size up still grips below the ridges. A cover one size too small may not pull over the lid at all.
Which Color Cover Fits Which Size?
Every Trash Smell Buster cover is color-coded by size, so once it's on the cart you can tell the size at a glance — handy if your household or community has more than one cart size:
- Green — 32 gallon
- Brown — 45 gallon
- Black — 64 gallon
- Blue — 95 gallon
The 64-gallon black cover is the most common choice — it's the standard cart most cities issue for household trash. The 95-gallon blue fits the large carts many suburbs issue for recycling or yard waste. Green (32) and brown (45) cover the smaller carts often used for yard debris, second carts, or smaller households.
How Does the Cover Actually Fit?
The cover is durable colored plastic with an elastic hem — no chemicals, nothing to refill or recharge. It pulls over the closed lid and stretches down the outside of the cart, extending roughly 12–14 inches down from the top — far enough to pass the molded ridges that ring the top of every rollout cart. The elastic grips below those ridges, all the way around, with no gaps.
That top section is exactly where odor escapes and where flies, ants, and small animals probe for a way in. Sealing it keeps odor inside the can and pests outside it. The rest of the cart stays bare — the cover is not a full-cart wrap, and it doesn't interfere with the wheels, the lift bar, or the truck's grabber arm on pickup day. The light lemon scent is built into the material, and when the cover gets dirty you simply hose it off or wash it and put it back on. It's made for outdoor carts and garages — it's not a kitchen product.
Notes for HOA and Curb-Day Carts
If your community requires carts to be stored out of sight or screens them behind enclosures, the cover changes nothing about how the cart stores — it adds no height and no width. On collection day, leave the cover on: it rides to the curb and back with the cart, and because it grips below the ridges, it stays put when the truck tips the cart. Many communities standardize on one cart size, so a single cover size (and color) usually covers the whole street — which is also why boards often buy them in sets.
